So today is strictly for the guys today. Why? Because we need to talk these beards that you are either trying to maintain or that you keep shaving. We are going to talk about if it’s consider professional to have a beard. Some might be thinking, “Seriously, people think it’s unprofessional?” Others might be thinking, “Yeah, I know it’s unprofessional.” But, there is some grey area on the topic.
Awhile-back, beards were very frowned upon in the workplace. Very frowned upon. Before, they were seen as being lazy and had some other negative connotations to them. Today, it seems like the tides are starting to turn and we are starting to see more beards in the workplace. So how do you know if it’s acceptable or not? This is a bit difficult to determine. It seems to come down to three things.
Industry Norms and Company Policies
Now, this first point is the most important to consider when growing facial hair: whether your industry and your specific company accept it. Unfortunately, there are not clear guides to your facial upkeep, but we talk about some generalities that might help. Normally, if your job is more on the creative side (i.e. artist, graphic designer, videographer, etc.) you could get away with some well-kept scruff on your face. However, if you are apart of or going into business, then you are should consider buying a razor. In addition, you should look to see if your company has any policies concerning your overall appearance.
Beards and Special Occasions
The next thing you should consider is if there are any special occasions. For example, if you are going into an interview for your dream job, you do not want to give the wrong impression. Or, let’s say your company is okay with you keeping that chinstrap of yours, but you have an important meeting approaching, what should you do? Going back to point number one, you should look at the industry that company is engaged in and the company’s policies. Those potential business partners you are meeting might think it’s unprofessional.
Maintaining A Professional Look
Number three is almost as important as number one. If you decided that it is okay to keep your facial hair, you need to keep it well maintained. Sorry, guys… That means No Shave November is not a great idea. Or on the other side, peach fuzz doesn’t look great either. Grooming that scruff of yours is NEEDED. The lumberjack look is not professional at all. Again, grooming your facial hair is needed.
